The source of innovation will continue to be what it always has been, human creativity; the biggest obstacle to achieving it is a view that such talent is a rare commodity, an accident of divine inspiration or a genetic accident. There will always be people with exceptional natural talent and moments of insight and inspiration which defy rational explanation, but a motivated team working with the right methodology designed for purpose is always going to be more effective than a genius in a garret.

What is Innovation?
Whilst there are many wide ranging definitions of what innovation encompasses, it very clearly relates to doing something new. Often it is the scale of what is being attempted that draws most debate.
Many organisations attempt to drive in the big breakthrough ideas while at the same time encouraging creativity, or continuous improvement activities, in everyday business. One way of differentiating this is to consider:
Big I … for breakthrough inventions (for example, a completely new product or service that significantly changes the market)
Small i … for incremental improvements (for example, improvements to processes that increase efficiency)
There is a useful distinction to be made between creativity and innovation.
Our Innovation module will show you how to embrace innovation and master the tools to devise creative ideas and initiate change whether it is a Big I or a Small I.
It is not easy just to be innovative when asked to do it! Encouraging innovation means managers need to create the right environment or culture for people to feel they can generate ideas without fear of ridicule or judgment.
It may appear contradictory to mention innovation and structure or process in the same breath. However a degree of process will help guide innovation towards business goals. Likewise, the use of creative tools and techniques will help open up individual and team thinking to broader opportunities as well as facilitating the development of ideas
